Bio:
Athenie grew up in the Bay Area, playing basketball in their driveway and the drums in the garage. In college, they worked as a student athletic trainer, learning how to support Division 1 athletes’ performance and recovery. Those experiences led them to pursue a Doctorate of Physical Therapy at UCSF/SFSU where they explored elective coursework in strength and conditioning, running biomechanics, pediatrics, pain neuroscience, health equity and humanitarianism. Since becoming a licensed physical therapist, Athenie has worked in a variety of settings including sports medicine, home health, hospice, telehealth and pediatrics. Athenie most recently achieved board certification as a clinical specialist in Orthopedics from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.
Athenie aims to empower people through connection, movement, and education. Their approach to physical therapy is human-first, evidence-based, and inclusive. Athenie’s work and community engagement centers the LGBTQ+ community, people of color, and neurodiverse folks. With the hopes of increasing access to care for all, Athenie also provides pro bono services through the Movement Network.
Personal interests/Hobbies:
Athenie and their partner have 5 senior rescue dogs who keep them active. When not at home with their own dogs, they often volunteer at Frosted Faces Foundation in Ramona, CA.
Athenie also loves to cook and has about a dozen cookbooks from the library on their shelf at any given time.
